Stainless Steel Tube Mills

5posts

Stainless tube mills and the units that complete a stainless line: forming, welding and sealing for 7 mm to 76 mm pipe at the slower speeds stainless strip demands. Three unit ranges are published here — ZT-20C, ZT-30 and ZT-50 — with the welding and sealing equipment that goes with them.

Why stainless lines run at 3-7 m/min

Stainless strip work-hardens as it is formed and carries heat away from the weld differently from carbon steel, so forming loads and welding energy have to be managed rather than pushed. The published line speeds on this site make the gap plain: 3 m/min to 7 m/min for the three stainless units, against 30 m/min to 100 m/min for the carbon steel straight-seam lines.

That is not a shortcoming to be argued away — it is the reason a stainless line is bought for surface finish, corrosion resistance and a clean weld rather than for tonnage. Specifying it against a carbon steel output target is the most common mistake in this group.

Choose by pipe range, not by model number

The three units overlap deliberately: ZT-20C covers 7 mm to 25 mm pipe ID, ZT-30 covers 13 mm to 30 mm and ZT-50 covers 20 mm to 76 mm. Pick from the smallest diameter you must run every week, and from the wall range — ZT-30 is the only one of the three published up to 1.5 mm wall.

Where the product range straddles two units, the usual answer is the wider machine run slower on small sizes, unless the small sizes are high volume. The mill is one unit of a line either way: welding head, sealing unit and run-out decide whether the finished tube is saleable.
